CHAPTER 11

Absolutists

Mike was especially eager to meet with Todd. He had worked through the weekend finding information on the governor that he thought might help him put the pieces together. What he had secured in the way of evidence seemed to him an open and shut case and just the way this investigation ought to end. He was going to walk into Todd’s office and present what he had found, and Todd would certainly see things his way. After all, he had gained the director’s trust by working diligently and not causing any problems. He was a team player and everybody knew it. His personal pep talk continued for the entire trip to GJED. “I can do this. I can do this!” he said to himself. He knew that accusing a high-ranking officer, such as the governor, wasn’t something that he could do without real reason, and he had a reason.

He tapped his comm and announced, “Garend to Director Sevick.”

Todd answered, “Sevick here.”

“Director, can I meet you this morning? I mean, right now?” Mike asked with urgency in his voice.

“Sure, Mike, I’m just getting into the office. Meet me in the secure room.”

Mike walked with determination from the entrance of the building to the conference room. When he entered, Todd was standing near the back of the room.

Todd greeted him at the door with an outstretched hand. “Now Mike, what seems to be the problem?” Mike took a deep breath.

Trina had picked up Tim and Greg, and the three of them were making their way back down to the Blavs. Greg had gotten clearance from Todd to pick up the memcard from the Pertakian named Ptels who had contacted him. Greg was concerned that because he hadn’t kept his appointment, he wouldn’t be able to find Ptels. In turn, Trina and Tim tried to reassure him they would do everything they could to find the Pertakian and procure the memcard.

Greg thought back to his captivity. It had haunted his dreams, and he despised the thought of going back there. What drove him was his insatiable desire to find out what could have been on that memcard and why his name was attached to it. Why had he been singled out for capture and almost certain death?

Tim broke Greg’s train of thought. “You do realize this could be some kind of trap. It is highly probable whoever was holding you may be attempting to finish what they started.”

Greg pulled out his enforcer and adjusted its power and beam width. “I have considered it, but it’s worth the risk if we can put some of these pieces together. We still need to find Liz.”

“Agreed,” stated Trina. “But you need to proceed with caution. We’ll back you up, but we both want you alive when we return to GJED.”

“Understood!” said Greg. “We’ll do this by the book. Now set us down over there where my gravicar used to be.”

“Starting scan of the area,” stated Tim.

Trina added, “Make sure to compensate for the density of the algae.
